Skylark and Merlin
Welcome to Skylark and Merlin Class Pages
Skylar Class teacher is Miss Dippie
Merlin class teacher is Miss Reeves
We have a very exciting term planned for the children. Our topic, after we have spent a short while with some settling-in activities, will be Space, taking us up until the October half term. Then, we will be learning all about the Mayans up to the Christmas holidays.
Through the Space topic the children will be taught mapping the solar system, structures and mechanisms using gears pulley’s, cams and levers - Holst’s The Planets, history of space exploration and observational drawings.
Within the Mayans topic the children will learn geography of South America, history of Mayans and their Gods, Forces-including gravity, air and water resistance, E-safety, and data handling.
Our topics will support our English studies, which will include explanation, persuasive, reports, recount, and narrative texts.
In maths, we will focus on place value of whole up to a million and decimal numbers, calculation skills including formal written methods for all four operations, statistics, and measurement.
PE lessons will be every Friday for this term; therefore, children should come to school wearing their PE kit, including their blue school jumper on this day.
PE kit: white shorts or tracksuit bottoms, plain coloured t shirt linked to your child’s house (no football shirts) and school sweatshirt, trainers or pumps, socks if your child wears tights.
*PLEASE ENSURE YOUR CHILD HAS THE CORRECT PE KIT- IT IS NOT AN OPPORTUNITY FOR A NON-SCHOOL UNIFORM DAY.
In year 5 we expect all children to write in a consistent, neat cursive style. All children will write using a handwriting pen. If you wish to practise this style at home, then please log in to the Letter join website where you will
find lots of handwriting activities. This will be uploaded onto the class dojo page.
How You Can Help Your Child At Home
Children are expected to practise their times tables regularly, which are tested three times per week. Children should be aware of which times table they are focusing on, in accordance with their 66 club assessment.
It is vitally important that year 5 children are confident in their times tables up to 12x12 by the end of year 5, as this will significantly help their learning going into year 6.
Spelling homework: Your child will receive spellings that are required to be known for their age group. This spelling list is sent home at the beginning of each term. These spellings will be tested, randomly, on a weekly basis. Some children will receive individual spelling lists, which will be worked on a week-by-week basis.
Ensure your child is reading five times a week for fifteen minutes and that this is logged in their reading diary. Reading with your child and asking them questions about the texts that they are reading is extremely important to ensure a secure understanding of the text. Children need to read a variety of texts – newspapers, blogs, recipes, instructions etc, this will give them a broad range of texts and help them understand different language used.
Handle with Care
If your family is experiencing difficulties at home, I would like to provide additional support at school. I understand that you are not always able to share details and that is okay. If your child is coming to school after a difficult night, morning, or weekend, please send myself or Miss Longworth a message stating ‘Handle with Care’ on Class Dojo. Nothing else will be said or asked. This will let me know that your child may need extra time, patience or help during the day.
